Gabz FM holds nationwide Parliamentary Debates

On Thursday, June 26, the U.S. Embassy and Gabz FM will launch a joint program that will conduct independent parliamentary debates in each of the 57 constituencies through September 2014.

On this program, a media team from Gabz FM will participate on a three-month-long road trip across Botswana, from Kgalagadi to Kasane to Gaborone, holding live broadcast parliamentary debates in each constituency with candidates from all political parties. The debates will take place in a public setting with members of all political parties present, and be broadcast live to hundreds of thousands Batswana listeners country-wide.

The independent parliamentary debates will enhance and strengthen the democratic process leading up to October 2014’s general elections by increasing the accountability of Botswana’s elected officials; encouraging all eligible voters to engage with candidates on a wide-range of local, national, and international issues; and highlighting support for the transparency within Botswana's democratic process and institutions.

The program also aims to combat voter apathy and increase turnout in the upcoming elections. The launch event will be open to interested press outlets, and will be held at the Main Mall outside the Cresta President Hotel on Thursday, June 26 from 10:00-11:00. Please arrive no later than 9:30am.
