Govt to spend an estimated P90 million buying the EVM

Thursday, 18 May, 2017 - 17:00

Electronic Voting Machine, Coordinator Gabriel Seeletse says the seven thousand Electronic Voting Machines to be procured from Indian company Bharat is estimated to cost the government P90 million.

Seeletso stated at a gathering dubbed ‘’Touch and Feel’’ EVM machines that the estimated amount will also be determined by the specifications that come with the machines.

He said that Bharat will also dispatch a technical team which will help with resolving issues related to machines in the event that the machines break down.

However, IEC has indicated that a voter has no access to a print out after voting to confirm whether the print resembles what the voter had intended to vote.

He said that the print out can only be provided once there has been a protest launched in court.

He further indicated that the EVM machines with paper trail were displayed today as result of Batswana calling for IEC to use machines with print out.

Currently, the Electoral Act which was passed hastily during the middle of the night in the last sitting of parliament does not provide that the machine should have a paper trail.
