BDP retracts its message on the Future of the BCL mine

The ruling BDP has issued an apology following what it calls a false message issued by its structures last week, purporting that the leadership will make a major announcement regarding the future of the BCL mine.

A member of the BDP Political Education and Election Committee, Botho Ntirang, told GabzFM News that the party is aware that a public announcement was made, which could have created a false hope on former BCL employees but emphasised that it did not originate from the Central Committee.

Pula Steel Judicial Manager appeals for stakeholder cooperation

Pula Steel Judicial Manager, Vijay Kulya-naraman has appealed to all stakeholders, including creditors, to cooperate with him to ensure that the company resumes operations.

Vijay said although Pula Steel faces a number of challenges, conditions for a comeback are favorable, as the steel industry has improved significantly over the past few months.

He revealed that Pula Steel is deep in debt, with close to a hundred creditors owed tens of millions of Pula.

Liquidator warns of scammers auctioning off some BCL assets

The public is warned that there is a scammer aiming to steal money from companies or individuals, under the pretext of auctioning off some BCL assets.

BCL Provisional Liquidator, Nigel Dixon-Warren says the individual, or individuals contact companies and members of the public, claiming that BCL assets are to be auctioned.

The scammer then says to participate in the auction; a deposit needs to be paid.

Finance minister to unveil the 2017/2018 national budget

Finance minister Kenneth Matambo is set to unveil the 2017/2018 national budget before parliament this afternoon.

This comes against the backdrop of a budget deficit of 3.8% of the Gross Domestic Product in the current fiscal year.

In the 2016/2017 budget, the government had to draw from its savings and borrow from both the domestic and foreign sources.

Search for 13 inmates who escaped from prison intensifies

In Francistown, the search for 13 inmates who were part of the 18 prisoners that escaped from Centre for Illegal Immigrants, has intensified.

This follows the capture of a 5th inmate, Gaomodimo Molosiwa, at Aerodrome location yesterday. He was serving 10 years behind bars for robbery.

Authorities say the inmates escaped after damaging security fence with a manhole cover last Saturday.

About 20 former BCL employees committed suicide after job loses

More than 20 former BCL employees have committed suicide after losing their jobs late last year.

Botswana Mine Workers Union, Secretary General, Mbiganyi Ramokate told opposition activists in Palapye that the former miners decided to commit suicide because they were never given counseling prior to losing their jobs.

Ramokate further said the statistics of the former miners who commit suicide will continue to increase.

Decision to revoke Cannibas Sativa permit receives condemnation

Businessman Motlhaleemang Moalosi has condemned a decision to revoke his permit to import industrial hemp seeds, saying it is politically motivated.

The seeds, known as Cannibas Sativa, are used to make hemp seed oil which can be used for cooking, lamp, and other products. The plant is in the same family group with marijuana.

Moalosi was granted the license after a fierce battle with the Ministry of Agriculture despite strong objection from the Trade and Industry Ministry.
