BURS ENCOURAGES ONLINE FILING AFTER FALLING SHORT OF TAX RETURN TARGET

Article By: Tumelo Mouwane

The Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) announced that it received 38,000 individual tax return filings for the past financial year, falling short of its target of 70,000.

Commissioner General Janet Makgolo revealed the statistics at a press conference today, indicating a 54% compliance rate for personal tax filings.

Makgolo highlighted that 77% of the 38,000 filings were submitted online.

In response, BURS has invested in upgrading its digital system to ensure it is secure and stable enough to handle increased traffic.

Additionally, BURS has procured three trucks to facilitate mobile tax collections across the country, aiming to improve collection efficiency.

Makgolo also announced that a digital services tax collections law is set to be introduced this year and is expected to be tabled before parliament in November.
