Speaker of the National Assembly, Dithapelo Keorapetse has stressed the critical importance of robust parliamentary oversight to ensure that the executive is held accountable.
When giving his maiden speech at the 150th Assembly of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Keorapetse emphasized the need for greater transparency, accountability, and the rule of law to ensure that government policies benefit all citizens equally.
Keorapetse further addressed gender inequality, noting that only 9% of MPs in Botswana are women, and urged reforms for greater gender parity.
Botswana continues to play an active role in global discussions on democracy, peace, and sustainable development. The IPU, which includes over 180 member parliaments, serves as a platform for MPs to tackle critical issues like human rights and conflict resolution.
