As of 2023, over 3,000 individuals have received treatment for alcohol use disorders, and 276 people are undergoing tobacco rehabilitation, funded by the Tobacco Levy.
According to Acting Minister of Health Lawrence Ookeditse , the growing demand for substance abuse treatment in Botswana has led to the construction of a new inpatient rehabilitation centre in Serowe.
Ookeditse revealed that the centre, set to open in the third quarter of 2025, will be located at the former Sekgoma Memorial Institute of Health Sciences. Further noting that it will offer fifty beds thirty for adults and twenty for adolescents, providing both inpatient and outpatient care.
He added that the project is partially funded by the Tobacco Levy, which has generated over P135 million in the past year.
