OPPOSITION PARTIES RAISE CONCERNS OVER STATE BROADCASTER'S ELECTION COVERAGE

Article By: Diana Motsu Opposition parties have raised concerns about the coverage of elections by the state broadcaster, Alluding that it only gives coverage to the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and not extended to them.

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Dithapelo Keorapetse, told Gabz FM News that they are not receiving fair coverage from state media. Keorapetse alluded that the government has abolished programs that previously covered all political parties, which he believes hinders the consolidation of democracy in Botswana.

Echoing these concerns, Botswana Congress Party Spokesperson Dr. Mpho Pheko noted that the Department of Broadcasting Services does not cover their rallies, exacerbating the issue of unequal media representation.

For his part, Botswana National Front Spokesman Ketlhalefile Motshegwa added that such practices undermine the democratic process by limiting the visibility and voice of opposition parties.

Efforts to get a comment from the Department of Broadcasting by Gabz FM News were futile before the time of airing.
